The South Carolina Department of Commerce Office of Innovation aims to help make South Carolina a top state in the nation to start and build a high-growth business. To do so, South Carolina must enable entrepreneurship and technology-based economic development successes, foster commercialization of technologies, support the increase of capital to home-grown companies and raise the profile of the state's innovation assets.
The South Carolina Innovation Office is focused on addressing solutions to the South Carolina Innovation Plan goals:
1) Develop a critical mass of high tech, high impact companies.
2) Grow a supportive, connected innovation community.
3) Support access to capital for companies at all stages of development.
4) Grow workforce talent equipped to work for high tech/high impact companies.
As part of achieving its mission, the Department of Commerce Office of Innovation has issued the South Carolina Innovation Challenge. In February 2015, Commerce awarded $2.6 million in grants to 19 organizations across South Carolina. In its inaugural round of innovation-related grants announced in May 2014, Commerce awarded $2.4 million in grant funds to 14 organizations across the state to further high-tech and entrepreneurial economic development.
