Founded in 1995, by Rebecca and Philip Ufkes, UEC Electronics, LLC (UEC) is an award-winning woman-owned, small business.
UEC's multi-disciplined engineering expertise includes: electrical, electronics, PWB/PCB layout, software development, mechanical, modeling, simulation and packaging. UEC's manufacturing capabilities include: complex electro-mechanical assembly, circuit card assembly (CCA), cable and wire harness assembly and system integration. UEC’s quality management system is ISO 9001 and AS 9100 registered.
This combination of engineering and manufacturing capability provides their customers with a unique opportunity to minimize schedule risk, improve product quality, and enhance the security of intellectual property.
UEC is a success story rooted in quality work, attention to detail and a few allies along the way. With Rebecca being a mechanical engineer, and Philip an electrical engineer, problem solving is second nature at UEC. In 1995, the company began with five employees working in a warehouse; in 2006, there were 32 employees and by 2011, the company had over 100 employees.
The Small Business Development Center (SBDC), the South Carolina Manufacturing Extension Partnership (SCMEP) and SC Department of Commerce have all contributed to helping UEC plan, grow and develop new markets. The SBDC has assisted from early on with everything from marketing materials, to business planning, to regulatory issues.
Both the SBDC and SCMEP have played a role in introducing UEC to new markets. In 2001, the bulk of UEC’s business was commercial industrial. With SBDC’s guidance, about 60% of UEC’s business is now from Department of Defense. The diversification in customer base has helped the company’s business remain stable during uncertain economic times.
In 2010, Rebecca Ufkes was named the South Carolina Small Business Person of the Year by the US Small Business Administration and went on to be selected runner–up national Small Business Person of the Year.
In 2011, UEC Electronics was named one of Inc. magazine’s 5000 fastest growing companies in the U.S., ranked 2250 nationally. In December 2011, Boeing selected UEC for it mentoring program, designed to help small businesses expand their reach into the aerospace sector. A strong technical foundation, solution-oriented operating practices, and help from small business resource allies makes a real difference.
