Established in the Carolina Mountains nearly 4 decades ago, Southland Log Homes has experienced great success in the Midlands, growing and expanding to the largest log home company in North America.
After experiencing growth both in the United States and Europe, now Southland has set its sights on China. Last month, Ken Sekley, president of Southland Log Homes, embarked on a trip to China to meet with his partners there in hopes of expanding his business to this new market.
With an annual impact of $34 billion, South Carolina’s agribusiness is increasingly important to our economy. The agribusiness industries employ over 200,000 people and represent one of the largest economic sectors in our state. Within that, Timber is our number one cash crop. Forestry in South Carolina is a $17 billion industry that employs over 90,000 across our state. Thus, the success of this industry is in turn critical to our state’s economic competitiveness and success.
The Department of Commerce is committed to helping our business grow – whether it is here at home or abroad. That is why we were proud to support partner with Southland Log Homes in expanding to expand its global presence by helping them to compete for contracts in the Hunan Province this January.
Knowing of Southland’s potential for international growth, representatives from the Department of Commerce were happy to assist when asked to advise Southland on an upcoming business trip to China. As part of our advisement, we helped Southland representatives secure their visa’s and gave them guidance on logistics and business protocols in China. The result of Ken’s trip to China was another deal with more likely to follow.
Ken Sekley, President of Southland Log Homes said, “We are lucky to be in a state that promotes and encourages exports and growth. My recent trip to China was successful in part because of the team at Commerce who showed us the ropes of doing business in China in order to make sure our trip and our meeting was worthwhile. I thank the Department of Commerce for being supportive of our success in the Palmetto state and abroad.”
