South Carolina is a manufacturing powerhouse. From automobiles and textiles to aircraft and appliances and everything in-between, a wide range of products are assembled in South Carolina every day. To put it simply – the workers in this state are good at making things; and, as a result, the world has taken notice.
In each of the last seven years, our exporters have achieved record sales numbers – topping $31 billion for the first time in 2016. We lead the nation in the export sales of completed passenger vehicles, tires and roller and ball bearings. Despite this success, we know even greater opportunity exists for our South Carolina companies. After all, more than 70 percent of the world’s purchasing power is located outside of the U.S.
Recognizing this, the S.C. Department of Commerce offers an export incentives program to assist companies of all sizes as they seek to expand their reach to new marketplaces all over the world. Last fall, this program received additional support as the state, for the fifth year, was awarded with a State Trade and Export Promotion (STEP) grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration.
This grant enables S.C. Commerce to work more closely with companies as they navigate the export process and enter new markets. From counseling and training services to providing access to U.S. Commercial Service programs, the funding allows us to offer a plethora of tools and resources to both existing and potential exporters. Funds are also available for companies to participate, along with the state, in major trade exhibitions – such as the Paris Air Show, which is taking place later this month – and in South Carolina-led trade missions, such as August’s trip to Mexico.
