Last Thursday, South Carolina’s Recycling Market Development Advisory Council (RMDAC) gathered in Greenville County for its bi-monthly meeting. As part of the meeting, Greenville County Solid Waste Manager Marcia Papin and RMDAC ex-officio member Joseph McMillin took the group on a landfill and composting tour at the Twin Chimneys Landfill.
Located off of U.S. Route 25, the commercial-scale compost facility hauls in food waste from public and private sector entites such as Michelin, Publix, Spartanburg School District Six and Greenville Health Systems. Through a certified compost process, food scraps are mixed with mulch made from residential yard trimmings, and those materials are turned into a compost product sold locally.
Perfectly complementing the Don’t Waste Food S.C. initiative, which was announced by Team South Carolina last year, this tremendous partnership provides businesses in the Upstate with the ability to compost food waste.
In addition to the Twin Chimneys Landfill, Greenville County has also started a residential collection for composting at the Enoree Residential Waste and Recycling Center. Throughout the meeting, RMDAC members were able to discuss methods of job creation and investment with large-scale composting across the state, as well as new ideas and innovation in recycling.
