South Carolina has made a name for itself around the world as a state that excels at making things. But, with more than 520 recycling companies operating within our borders, we’re also becoming known as a state that excels at remaking things.
As we prepare our workforce to further support this burgeoning recycling industry, the S.C. Department of Commerce Recycling Market Development team is partnering with the University of South Carolina Office of Career Services to provide experiential learning to students.
Designed to supply students with hands-on experience in professional workplace settings, the first session took place on October 6 at Sonoco's Columbia, S.C. facility. The event featured a panel discussion with professionals representing several prominent South Carolina recycling industry leaders, such as Atlas Organics, Southeast Recycling and the City of Columbia.
Challenging students to think outside the box regarding their future careers, Atlas Organics’ Jenny Harrison advised, “Comfort zones may not be a great fit. It’s important to challenge yourself to do what’s impactful to you and brings you happiness.”
Moving forward, we know that recycling will continue to be an important sector for Team South Carolina; and, as such, continued efforts to develop a workforce pipeline for that sector will be critical.
