South Carolina knows what drives automotive success. With an impact of $27 billion, the sector employs more than 72,000 South Carolinians. And, the Palmetto State is a global leader in automotive manufacturing – home to some of the world’s biggest brands, including giants like BMW, Bridgestone, Continental Tire, Giti Tire, Mercedes-Benz Vans, Michelin and Volvo Cars, on top of the around 500 other auto-related companies.
This booming industry continues to accelerate. Companies operating within our borders are making commitments to grow and build the next generation of vehicles right here. This year alone, Mercedes-Benz Vans announced the company will produce the newest eSprinters at its Charleston County facility; Volvo Cars announced it will manufacture future electric S60 models at its Berkeley County facility; and BMW started construction on a new $20 million training center on its Spartanburg County campus.
The fact that these companies are incorporating S.C. into strategic, future growth plans speaks volumes to the business climate and workforce in our state.
In an effort to continue that momentum, Team S.C. gathers each year to discuss the latest business trends, best practices and to make connections at the South Carolina Automotive Summit. Taking place virtually this year, the event will be held May 11-13. Attendees have the opportunity to hear directly from industry experts on a variety of topics, including forecasting, workforce, electric technology, supply chain, logistics and much more.
Additionally, the S.C. Commerce Business Services division and S.C. Automotive Council are hosting the annual Automotive B2B Supplier Matchmaker during the summit, a valuable business event that connects auto suppliers with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and tier 1 manufacturers statewide.
With so much news and excitement surrounding our state’s auto industry, it’s clear this sector will only continue to grow. As it does – and South Carolina further cements itself as a global automotive powerhouse – Team S.C. remains committed to providing a business climate where companies can shift into high gear and thrive.
