Site to create 1,000 green jobs by 2014
SUNNVYALE, Calif.—January 6, 2011— AQT Solar, a leading developer of low-cost CIGS (copper-indium-gallium-diselenide) thin-film solar cells today announced the company has selected Richland County, South Carolina as the location for its second manufacturing facility. The company plans to create 1,000 jobs at the existing 184,000 square foot LEED Silver Certified facility over the next four years. The site, which will be upfitted beginning in the first half of this year, will expand AQT’s current production capacity and help to fill the current order backlog of 160MW, a portion of which will be delivered this year via AQT’s Sunnyvale manufacturing site.
South Carolina’s strong market for clean energy and favorable business climate made it an attractive choice for AQT to locate its second facility. The large number of universities and technical colleges in the region provides a trained labor force required to fill the jobs that the facility will require. “AQT Solar has achieved significant growth in a short period of time and we are excited to work with the state of South Carolina as we begin this next phase of our company’s development,” said Michael Bartholomeusz, CEO, AQT Solar. “This new facility will not only increase the production capacity for AQT in the years to come, but will help drive the clean tech industry in this great state and create thousands of sustainable, high value jobs. The new facility, located in the Carolina Pines development in Richland County, will begin producing AQT’s breakthrough CIGS solar cells by the beginning of 2012 and ultimately grow to approximately 1GW of annual capacity by the end of 2014. It will be built out in phases, targeting installation of 30-40MW annual production capacity and 60 jobs this year, and 1,000 jobs in total by the end of the four-year build out.

In August 2010, AQT celebrated the opening of its first manufacturing facility, located in Sunnyvale, California, with 15MW of production capacity. This facility will also increase production capacity this year, reaching its full 30-40MW annual capacity by the end of 2011.
