Last week, while the eyes of the world were on the picturesque green at Hilton Head Island’s Harbor Town Link Golf course, members of S.C. Commerce’s Recycling Market Development team were focused on a different type of green – RBC Heritage’s eco-friendly and sustainability initiatives.
With approximately 18.8 tons of recycled waste diverted from landfills last year, the tournament is working to become one of the first Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) Tour events worldwide to attain the global, independently verified, eco-label for sustainable golf tournaments, GEO Certified.
To assist in this effort, RBC Heritage officials invited S.C. Commerce’s Recycling Market Development team to attend and help promote sustainability at the event for the second year in a row. The primary message they conveyed to attendees throughout the tournament was simple – short term actions, such as recycling, food composting and energy conservation, have significant, long-term impacts.
And, these impacts aren’t confined to just the environment. Sustainable practices can have a major impact on the economy, as well. For example, if every household in the Carolinas recycled just two more bottles each week, it could create an additional 300 new jobs.
So, next time you need to dispose of an empty bottle or get rid of an old plastic container, follow the lead of the RBC Heritage and recycle. By adopting these green behaviors, you’ll be able to positively impact both our environment and economy for years to come.
