Within the next 40-60 days, the educational institutions in this state will graduate yet another class of students, adding to South Carolina’s robust workforce. As the state’s industrial activity continues to grow, the mission of these schools and colleges is clear – develop a workforce that will meet the needs of both existing and future industry. To ensure that this happens, communication and collaboration between business and education leaders is critical.
Recognizing that, S.C. Commerce works with partners across the state to foster a collaborative approach to workforce development. Our 12 Regional Workforce Advisors are one component of that effort, bridging the gaps between local educators and industry. S.C. Commerce also chairs the relatively new Coordinating Council for Workforce Development. Created by the legislature in 2016, the council is tasked with establishing a more coordinated approach between state agencies involved in the training of South Carolina’s workforce.
Moving forward, as unemployment levels remain low and industry demands continue to increase, Team South Carolina’s workforce development initiatives will be more important than ever. By collaborating and thinking creatively, we’ll be able to provide our businesses with the skilled labor they need to keep South Carolina moving forward.
