COLUMBIA, S.C. – February 1, 2012 – Nucor Corporation, one of North America's largest steel bar producers, has announced plans to modernize and enhance its bar mill facility in Darlington County.
“We are excited to be investing in our Darlington mill in order to serve a growing segment of our bar mill business. We believe the engineered bar markets will continue to be strong into the future, driven by energy, automotive, heavy truck and heavy equipment manufacturers. This investment in our Darlington mill will position Nucor to meet the growing demands of our engineered bar customers,” said Rex Query, vice president and general manager for Nucor Steel South Carolina.
Nucor will add equipment to the Darlington County facility to further diversify its bar steel manufacturing capabilities. The new equipment will allow the company to roll a broader range of bar steel products.
“It’s exciting to see Nucor increase its footprint in South Carolina and we celebrate the new, high-paying jobs they will create. This announcement is also another big win for one of our state’s rural areas. We are working every day to make sure our state has a business-friendly climate that encourages investments like this one,” said Gov. Nikki Haley.
In the past year, South Carolina has recruited more than $4.7 billion in investment and more than 13,000 new jobs in the manufacturing sector.
“Nucor has been an important part of South Carolina’s business community for years, and it’s great to see the company expand in Darlington County. Manufacturers like Nucor are continuing to create new job opportunities across our state,” said Secretary of Commerce Bobby Hitt.
“The capability to roll additional bar products at the Darlington mill will open new markets for Nucor,” said Robert Long, executive director of the Darlington County Economic Development Partnership. “This expansion will also allow Nucor to continue to improve quality and meet customers’ expectations.”
“Nucor has been a vital part of our community since 1969 with a long history of community involvement,” said Billy Baldwin, chairman of Darlington County Council. “This modernization is a testament to the local workforce, and we are delighted that they continue to invest in Darlington County.”
The Coordinating Council for Economic Development approved Darlington County for a $200,000 grant from the Governor’s Closing fund for this project. ReadySC will provide pre-employment training.
