Celebrating Economic Development Achievements, Opportunities

To recognize the innovations and talent supporting South Carolina in “advancing the future, now,” The 2024 Governor’s Economic Summit united state, business and community leaders Monday, Jan. 29, 2024, setting forth South Carolina’s long-term economic development vision. In addition to remarks by Governor Henry McMaster, Secretary of Commerce Harry M. Lightsey III and Deputy Secretary of Commerce Ashely Teasdel, panel discussions included locally educated and employed talent, AI applications across several industry verticals, and a keynote presentation by Scout Motors President and CEO Scott Keogh.

During the conference, Secretary Lightsey publicly unveiled the South Carolina Department of Commerce’s (S.C. Commerce) new strategic framework, designed to guide the agency’s economic development efforts, at a state level, over the next three to five years. Informed by thorough quantitative and qualitative research, the framework sets a clear goal, objective and industry targets, which include three new key industries – advanced energy, life sciences and headquarters.

“The ability to excel in this transformative time is a must,” said Secretary Lightsey. “And it is something that each of us must be prepared to do regardless of the role we play in securing impactful and targeted economic investment for the state and supporting the businesses that are in our state.”
