Investment expected to create 10 new jobs
COLUMBIA, S.C. – MW Industries, a specialty spring and fastener manufacturer, today announced that it will expand its Springmasters/B&S Screw Machine Division in Greenville County. The expansion is expected to generate at least 10 new jobs.
“Increasing custom manufacturing operations of precision springs and machine parts at our Greer operation is an important step in our company’s growth,” said Bill Marcum, chief executive officer of MW Industries. “We are extremely pleased to consolidate our acquisition of Hi-Tech Machine of Concord, North Carolina into our Greenville County operations, and very appreciative for the support and leadership of the Greenville Area Development Corporation, city of Greer, South Carolina Department of Commerce, and others who assisted in making this announcement a reality.”
The company is in process of transferring equipment from the recent acquisition to its existing facility at 1450 S. Buncombe Street in Greer, and expects to begin expanded operations at the facility later this year, with upfitting of the space and associate recruiting already underway.
“It is always exciting to see one of our existing businesses choose to increase its footprint here in South Carolina. We celebrate MW Industries’ decision to expand its operations and create new jobs in Greer. We know our economic development efforts are on the right track when companies choose to further invest in their Palmetto State locations,” said Gov. Nikki Haley.
Established in 1957, the Springmasters/B&S Screw Machine Division is a custom manufacturer specializing in wire forms, assemblies, compression springs, extension springs, torsion springs and machined parts. It manufactures precision springs and components in wire diameters from .005”-.625” in a variety of standard and exotic materials, with CNC turning, milling and Swiss turning capabilities available on-site, as are honing, centerless grinding, brazing/soldering and assembly work.
“Manufacturers understand that in South Carolina we know how to make things and make them well. MW Industries’ decision to expand here shows that our state’s business-friendly climate and skilled workforce talent continue to attract investment. Every one of these new jobs will have impact in Greer,” said Secretary of Commerce Bobby Hitt.
Since January 2011, South Carolina has recruited more than $7 billion in capital investment and more than 17,000 jobs in the manufacturing sector.
“County council is very pleased to have MW Industries’ Springmasters division expanding in the Greenville area,” said H.G. “Butch” Kirven, Greenville Area Development Corporation board member and chairman of Greenville County Council. “This company provides precision technical support to a number of advanced manufacturing enterprises in the area, and we are grateful to have them as part of our business community.”
With 14 divisions and headquartered in Chicago, Ill., MW Industries has nearly 1,000 associates at 14 locations across the United States, and is recognized as a world-class supplier of springs, fasteners and metal stampings from spring tempered materials.
“MW Industries’ Springmasters division is a long-standing and valued member of the Greer business community,” said Wryley Bettis, chairman of the Greer Development Corporation. “We are pleased to support their growth and success here, and appreciate their contributions as an important part of our business community.”
The growth allows Springmasters to “meet growing needs in the medical, robotics and power tool markets in particular, which require the unique capability to machine complex parts with very precise tolerances,” said Cindy Runnette, general manager of MWI’s Springmasters facility in Greer. “We see tremendous regional growth opportunities as we work to provide precision machining excellence that is unmatched in the local marketplace.”
Runnette cited the additional assistance of South Carolina Manufacturing Extension Partnership in developing plans to make the equipment transfer and upfit as seamless and efficient as possible, while noting that Greenville County’s business-friendly environment and skilled workforce helped secure the decision to expand here.
Jobs being added include machinists, CNC programmers and quality support positions, Runnette noted. Anyone interested in being considered for positions should submit resumes to [email protected].
