In recent years, the State of South Carolina has cemented its status as an industrial powerhouse. We're a top producer of premium automobiles, tires, commercial aircraft and many other advanced products. Prior to becoming a leader in the manufacturing renaissance, however, the Palmetto State was home to a different type of economic driver -- the military.
Even before officially becoming a state nearly 230 years ago, South Carolina boasted a strong military presence. Its first naval shipyard was leased in 1777, and the state's militias were essential forces during the American Revolutionary War. Today, eight major military installations and numerous other facilities throughout the state employ more than 62,000 personnel, accounting for $2.6 billion in payroll. In fact, an economic impact study recently commissioned by the S.C. Military Base Task Force found that the military has a $24.1 billion economic impact on the state, annually. The full study can be accessed on the Task Force's website here.
More than just an important pillar of our economy, the military's robust footprint in South Carolina is integral to the state's communities. The service men and women who call South Carolina home volunteer in our charities, support our businesses and send their children to our schools. They help make our state the special place that it is.
So, on this Memorial Day, as we remember those who have died serving our nation, I encourage you to also recognize your family members, friends and neighbors who proudly work to protect our freedom, ensuring that both our state and nation remain 'Just right.'
