In July 2016, S.C. Commerce formed a partnership with the S.C. Biotechnology Industry Organization (SCBIO) to determine the footprint of the life sciences sector in South Carolina. Following the completion of an economic impact study, the two organizations forged a memorandum of understanding outlining shared goals and objectives designed to further catalyze and grow the sector across South Carolina.
This week, as part of that effort, a delegation of 22 state and industry leaders attended the 2018 BIO International Convention in Boston. While there, Team South Carolina hosted a breakfast, which attracted more than 75 leaders from across the global life sciences industry, including Biotechnology Innovation Organization President Joanne Duncan.
This event, as well as our team's participation in the conference, helped spread the message about South Carolina as an ideal destination for life sciences firms. In fact, more than 400 life sciences companies already call the Palmetto State home; and, this booming sector employs approximately 15,000 workers statewide.
