From the rolling mountains to the picturesque Lowcountry, South Carolina's rural communities are essential elements of the character and charm of the Palmetto State. From an economic perspective, with around 14% of our total population living in rural areas, South Carolina's smaller communities are an integral part of our economy.
Recognizing this, Team South Carolina is committed to smart growth strategies that will help rural communities achieve their goals for development, while maintaining their distinctive rural character.
In 2019, Team S.C. recruited more than $506 million in capital investment in rural communities, adding nearly 1,600 new jobs. Those announcements include Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation in Cherokee County; MobileFleet Inc. in Marion County; Sea Pro Boats, LLC in Fairfield County; and Spectrum Quartz in Dillon County.
To advance these efforts and promote economic activity within our state's rural communities, S.C. Commerce is hosting the 30th Annual South Carolina Rural Summit next month. Gathering leaders from across the state, this year's event includes sessions on resources available to communities, leadership development, rural education and planning for the future.
Team South Carolina has long been committed to the advancement of our state's rural areas, and this event will help ensure we are doing all we can to continue to grow and diversify these communities. After all, by supporting economic growth within all corners of our state, we will ensure prosperity and quality of life for generations.
