The future of commerce and conservation was at the forefront of Sustain SC’s inaugural Sustainability Symposium that was held last week in Columbia. The immersive event connected sustainability leaders, S.C.-based companies and government officials.
During the symposium, Governor Henry McMaster announced the launch of the Sustain SC Land and Water Action Fund (LAWF), a new conservation fund dedicated to protecting South Carolina’s precious natural resources. Google contributed the first donation to LAWF with a $500,000 grant, which will go toward permanently protecting a portion of Waites Island from development. During the afternoon portion of the symposium, the Waccamaw Community Foundation announced a full match to Google’s grant.
S.C. Commerce’s Business Services Director Chantal Fryer had the opportunity to serve on a panel discussion to talk about how sustainability initiatives are becoming a top priority for businesses around the world, and how the state is working to connect companies’ sustainability goals with solutions that benefit the economy, environment and South Carolinians.
The Sustainability Symposium was designed to forge new connections, spark new ideas, and mark milestone moments and new beginnings for a more sustainable South Carolina.
