From record expansions to ribbon cuttings, 2022 has been a year of economic wins and celebrations in all corners of South Carolina. Not only has the state been successful in recruiting new industry, but S.C.'s existing companies continue to grow and thrive, expanding their footprints across the state.
This past year, BMW announced a record $1.7 billion expansion to prepare Plant Spartanburg for EV production and to build a battery assembly facility; Mark Anthony Brewing officially opened for business in Richland County; and Nephron Nitrile –Nephron Pharmaceuticals Corporation’s newest endeavor – welcomed a massive delivery of equipment for its new Lexington County operation.
Other highlights from the year include S.C. Commerce’s participation in Governor Henry McMaster’s EV summit, which brought together manufacturers, educators and economic developers to focus on advancing EV development in South Carolina. Additionally, S.C. Commerce led state delegations to participate in trade shows around the world, including the Daegu International Future Auto & Mobility Expo in Korea and Farnborough Airshow in England – all with the goal of recruiting specific industries to the state and growing South Carolina’s international footprint.
These are just a handful of the many 2022 accomplishments and activities, and the year isn’t over yet! From diverse company announcements to far-reaching international activities, the common thread in South Carolina's approach to economic development is collaboration.
