The 2024 South Carolina Rural Summit gathered local economic development champions March 4-5, 2024, in North Augusta, S.C., to continue the advancement and promotion of rural communities. Speakers highlighted success stories, from creative childcare and mobility solutions to Main Street walkability and community engagement strategies. Secretary of Commerce Harry M. Lightsey III also hosted a conversation with state legislators on crucial priorities for rural communities.

As the Rural Summit marked its 34th year, much success can be traced back to the dedication of S.C. Commerce Special Advisor Maceo Nance, who will celebrate 50 years of service to South Carolina later this year. In special recognition of Nance’s service, particularly to rural communities, Governor Henry McMaster presented Nance with the Order of the Palmetto — the state’s highest civilian honor. Nance continues to leave an indelible impact on economic development in South Carolina, as he continues to advise Secretary Lightsey and S.C. Commerce’s rural development efforts.
