Innovation: 3Phase Initiative Off to a Strong Start

Earlier this year, the state’s Office of Innovation announced 3Phase – a new initiative aimed at assisting South Carolina small businesses acquire federal grant awards. Focused specifically on the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grants, 3Phase is critical to the continued development of the state’s knowledge economy.

As part of the initiative, 3Phase manages the grant application process for a select portfolio of companies. Nearly six months after its inception, seven companies have been accepted into the program. Among them are:

  •  Zeriscope, LLC: A medical technology company that has created an open access, web-based mobile exam system that facilitates live, secure, online, video-enabled telemedicine exams.
  • Engineered Marine Coatings Inc.: A marine coatings company that engineers marine paint and coatings designed to resist the corrosive effects of salt water while also improving the appearance of the marine craft.
  • Clinacuity, Inc.: A medical technology company that is developing a new system to automatically de-identify clinical notes found in the electronic health record, to then improve the availability of clinical text for secondary uses, as well as ameliorate the protection of patient data confidentiality.
  • US Building Innovations, Inc.: A firm that specializes in easy-to-clean surface technology. Their easy-to-apply EZ Armor systems are the new industry standard for nanotechnology surface treatments.
  • VisiGrow LLC: An aggrotech company that has developed an Internet of Things solution which helps control all variables that are measurable for higher yields in a shorter growing cycle.

In addition to assisting this initial portfolio of firms, 3Phase will continue to host grant writing workshops, partnering with organizations such as IT-oLogy, the NEXT Innovation Center and the Southeastern Institute of Manufacturing and Technology. Such events have already been scheduled for September 18 in Columbia, September 27 in Florence and October 9 in Greenville.
