Message from Secretary Hitt: A diversified economy in S.C.

BobbyThe 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, once remarked, "I am a slow walker, but I never walk back." In the Palmetto State, we have experienced great success over the last 10 years. In reviewing the 2019 industry recruitment results, while the pace may be a little slower, South Carolina continues to move forward.

Building on the momentum gained in previous years, from January to December, Team South Carolina won 129 economic development projects, accounting for $2.4 billion in capital investment and more than 9,400 new jobs. These numbers not only represent new opportunities and a higher quality of life for South Carolinians, these projects prove that Team S.C.'s commitment to a business-friendly environment will make our economy prosperous and resilient in the years to come.

Maintaining our stronghold as a leader in the manufacturing renaissance, the state's manufacturing sector led the way, accounting for more than 80% of capital investment in 2019. And, while we are a manufacturing powerhouse, South Carolina's economy continues to diversify. Last year, Team S.C. recruited more than 2,100 jobs in the office, headquarters and research and development sector, maintaining our reputation as a top destination for headquarters facilities and other office projects.

Known internationally as a brand state, South Carolina has developed a multifaceted, well-rounded economy. As we enter 2020, I can assure you that Team S.C. is committed to maintaining our positive business environment and ensuring we meet the needs of all companies that call South Carolina home - now or in the future.
