In 2017, recognizing the burgeoning of South Carolina's life sciences industry, S.C. Commerce partnered with the S.C. Research Authority (SCRA) and S.C. Biotechnology Industry Organization (SCBIO) to commission and release an economic impact study, showcasing the scope of this growing sector in our state. The study found that life sciences has an $11.4 billion annual economic impact and is comprised of approximately 400 firms in South Carolina.
Now, nearly a year-and-a-half later, Team South Carolina is looking to add to those totals. This week, S.C. Commerce led a delegation to Dubai for Arab Health 2019. One of the largest medical trade shows in the world, the four-day event provided our team with an excellent opportunity to meet and build relationships with leaders in the global life sciences industry. It also gave the several South Carolina firms that participated a chance to increase their international trade activity.
Moving forward, as we continue to work to promote life sciences -- and our other target industry clusters -- participation in events like Arab Health will remain critical. As we attend these trade shows and meet with international business leaders, we'll be able to further spread the message that our state truly is 'Just right.'
