Message from Secretary Hitt: The magnitude of manufacturing in S.C.

It's no secret that over the last several decades South Carolina has established itself as a true leader in advanced manufacturing. With a highly skilled workforce and a robust infrastructure network that promotes global connectivity, a remarkable number of manufacturers have decided to make significant investments within our borders. Every time a finished product rolls off an assembly line, it represents a culmination of Team S.C.’s hard work.

South Carolina has been at the forefront of a manufacturing renaissance. Since 2011, our state has seen manufacturing employment growth of more than 21%, a figure that leads the Southeast. And, according to a study released last week by the South Carolina Manufacturers Alliance and SC Future Makers, manufacturing has an economic impact that totals between $194 billion and $206 billion annually. Prepared by Dr. Joseph Von Nessen, research economist with the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina, the report shows that manufacturing supports – either directly or indirectly – more than 30% of jobs statewide.

Additionally, the research finds South Carolina manufacturing is largely anchored by the aerospace, automotive and tire sectors along with their extended supply chains.

We take great pride in our manufacturing history, and this study underscores and reinforces the incredible magnitude of this sector in the Palmetto State.

Looking ahead, as we seek to remain at the top of the global industry ladder, Team S.C. recognizes the growth and diversity of the manufacturing sector is key for our economy. And, by working together to promote a climate that is friendly to industry, we will continue to show the world that South Carolina truly is ‘Just right’ for business.
