South Carolina has made a name for itself in the world of complex manufacturing, due in large part to our ability to efficiently transport products. Our unparalleled global connectivity continues to be a major draw for companies looking to invest in our state and export goods; and, the Port of Charleston plays a significant role in that. To accommodate growing demand, the S.C. Ports Authority is building the brand new Hugh K. Leatherman, Sr. Terminal on the site of the former Navy base in North Charleston.
Construction will soon begin on phase one of the terminal wharf -- 1,400 feet of berth that will be able to accommodate ships hauling up to 18,000 metal cargo containers. With five ship-to-shore gantry cranes capable of lifting containers 169 feet above the dock, this new asset will allow South Carolina to remain a hub for international trade.
