Message from Secretary Hitt: S.C.'s Growing International Footprint

In the summer of 1975, the S.C. Department of Commerce, then known as the State Development Board, established its first international presence with an office in Europe. Over the next four decades, South Carolina's status as a global industrial leader grew significantly and so did its international footprint. Today, with a presence in China, Germany, India, Japan and South Korea, S.C. Commerce's reach spreads far and wide.

This international influence has allowed the Palmetto State to build and strengthen relationships with many industry leaders around the world; and, as a result, a diverse, globally-connected economy has been cultivated within our borders. Since 2011, approximately 350 foreign-based firms have invested nearly $20 billion in South Carolina, accounting for more than 60 percent of the state's capital investment total during that time span. And, on the trade side, South Carolina has achieved a new record in export sales in each of those years.

This week, as they do each year, the individuals who comprise our international team visited South Carolina. By touring the state and meeting with various state leaders, allies and private sector partners, the week-long visit ensures that our foreign-based teammates are equipped with all of the latest insights and information regarding the Palmetto State and its dynamic business community.

Moving forward, as we seek to expand South Carolina's global reach even more, we know that the invaluable members of our international offices will play a crucial role. After all, they are our boots on the ground overseas, and only through their efforts can we continue to spread the message around the world that South Carolina is 'Just right' for business.
