Dum Spiro Spero. Latin for “While I breathe, I hope.”
Those words, inscribed on South Carolina’s state seal, evoke a true spirit of optimism. Since the birth of our state on May 23, 1788 —232 years ago this past Saturday— South Carolinians have exhibited a sense of hope and resiliency that has molded the Palmetto State into the special place we proudly call home.
Throughout our rich, storied history, South Carolina has overcome adversity, growing stronger and more united in the face of uncertainty. Over the past couple of months, we have once again been tested. Residents and businesses alike have banded together to lend a helping hand to each other; to ensure the wellness and safety of neighbors; and to ultimately work toward regaining a sense of normalcy.
In the weeks and months ahead, as we continue navigating the revitalization of our state, South Carolina’s spirit of hope will once again prevail. And, that resilience will help ensure a prosperous future – fueled by our inherit optimism – for South Carolinians all across our state.
